Fifth, treating the alternatives as unavailable. An R-38 ceiling or a ceiling assembly at a U-factor of 0.025 or lower, an attic radiant barrier not installed on spaced sheathing, or R-2 or more of continuous insulation above or below the deck all stand in for the steep row here. One of them is frequently cheaper than the covering. Ask whether the insulation path was priced at all.
A bid that answers all five has read the code it claims to satisfy. A bid that answers none of them is pricing shingles and hoping the plan checker is in a hurry that week.
